Real Name: John Uhler Lemmon III

Graduated from Harvard University and served in the navy in WW2. An appearance on Broadway in 1953 brought him to the attention of Hollywood and he made his film debut in It Should Happen To You (1954). He quickly became established as one of the best comedy actors and went on to a 7 year collaboration with Billy Wilder starting with Some Like it Hot (1959). Other acclaimed performances were in Days of Wine and Roses (1962) and The China Syndrome (1979) His long association with Walter Matthau started with The Fortune Cookie (1969) and included The Odd Couple (1968) and many other films. He directed 1 film Kotch (1971) and periodically returned to the stage. nominated 8 times for an Academy award he won Best Supporting Actor for Mr. Roberts (1955) and Best Actor for Save the Tiger (1973).
