Mark David Chapman, a former security guard from Hawaii, shot and killed music legend John Lennon outside the Dakota Apartments in New York City on December 8, 1980. Chapman came to New York specifically to attack the famous ex-Beatle on two occasions, but didn't success on the first. Mark David Chapman shot Lennon four times with a .38 revolver and was arrested without event, claiming that a copy of the J.D. Salingers book 'Catcher in the Rye' could explain his crime.
After initially pleading 'not guilty by reason of insanity' for second-degree murder, Mark David Chapman later changed his plea to guilty, insisting that God had told him to do so. In August 1981, he was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison and is currently an inmate of the Attica State Prison in New York. He has to be kept in solitary confinement due to death threats from other prison inmates.
Since 2000, Mark David Chapman has been denied parole four times. Public sentiment holds that he would be murdered if released, many claiming that he would not last one day alive as a free man. Yoko Ono claims she could be a target for the convict if he were to be set free. His next parole hearing is scheduled for October 2008.
