Wendy O. Williams, the lead singer for the punk rock band the Plasmatics, was arrested at a Milwaukee club in early 1981 for obscenity, resisting arrest and battery after a performance.
Williams had clashed with police in several cities over the content of her performances and police officers at the Milwaukee show said they observed her "fondling her breasts, buttocks and vaginal area with her hand."
A Milwaukee jury found Williams not guilty of assaulting a police officer and the dropped the other subsequent charges. Williams later filed a multimillion dollar civil suit against the Milwaukee PD, charging they "sexually assaulted and beat" her during the arrest -- that she had been repeatedly punched and kicked in the face. She used her arrest mugshot -- which shows facial bruising and a black eye -- as evidence of the assault, but a civil jury rejected her brutality claims. Williams committed suicide in 1998 at 48 years old.
