Here 2 news articles about a steer trying stave off
execution. He almost made it.
Steer Seems To Find Out It's for Lunch
A 1,100-pound, black-and-white Charolais-Angus
steer disappeared from a Fort Calhoun, Neb., acreage one day
before it was to be the prize in a live beef raffle at the St.
Cecilia Cathedralfest.
The steer was still on the run Sunday night when volunteers
were cleaning up the festival grounds and after the raffle
winners, Marty and Maggie McCaslin, had been picked.
The event was the school's fund-raising project, said Bonnie
Pryor, principal at St. Cecilia Cathedral Grade School. The
steer was to have been butchered and processed to suit the
winner.
Attorney Simon Albracht, who donated the steer and was
keeping it at his acreage, discovered the animal missing
Saturday morning. He figured a gate probably had been left open
and the animal made a break for it.
"We'll get it back," Albrecht told Pryor.
The steer was branded and should be easy to identify, he
said.
No matter what happens to the steer, the McCaslins will get
their beef, said Pryor. If the steer is not found, another one
will be slaughtered in its place.
Albracht donates a steer for the raffle each year, Pryor
said. Albracht had always offered the donation anonymously, but
this year the steer raised a bit more attention.
Steer Went on the Lam With Females
The 1,100-pound black-and-white Charolais-Angus
steer that disappeared one day before it was to be the raffled
off at a Sunday event was found Monday, surrounded by a herd of
Black Angus females.
The steer had broken through three fences, ending up in a
pasture about six blocks from the Fort Calhoun, Neb., acreage
where it was raised. The owner of that acreage notified
attorney Simon Albracht, the steer's owner.
"We think he must have been lonely," said Omahan Ray
Swiercek, who helped transport the steer to Omaha Tuesday.
"Maybe he wanted his last chance at freedom."
Swiercek said the steer was locked tightly in a trailer and
wouldn't get out again - until he is butchered.
After that, the beef will go to Marty and Maggie McCaslin,
the winners of the raffle at the St. Cecilia
Cathedral-fest.
