OSLO, Norway - Fisherman Olaf Iversen had a whopper of fish story to tell Tuesday when he pulled up his shrimp net and landed about 1,640 gallons of smuggled alcohol. A total of 31 barrels were tied together underwater 15 miles from Stavern, a town in Southern Norway. I had laid out the net, and was pulling it in when I saw that there were a lot of oil barrels hanging on the net, Iversen summoned the coast guard when he realized what they were. Norway has some of the world´s highest alcohol prices as a result of high taxes meant to discourage drinking. The prices have led to wide-spread smuggling. It was not mentioned whether the abandoned contraband was later consumed.
