 IOC Shoots Down Olympic Handgun Proposal | | By: BizarreNews | Published: 12/10/2000 | | | |
| SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Olympic games are big business, and any productwith an Olympic endorsement, be it condoms, beer or life insurance (yes, Olympic life insurance) stands to make a fortune. But the International Olympic Committee has drawn the line at an official Olympic handgun. Salt Lake County Sheriff Aaron Kennard spent two years lining up Swiss gun maker SIG Sauer and the Salt Lake Organizing Committee to provide the commemorative side arms. The company made two prototypes, a pair of .40-caliber semiautomatics engraved with the Olympic rings and gold script. But the head of the IOC stopped the whole deal when he saw a sample. IOC spokesman Franklin Servan-Schreiber says guns and world peace don´t mix. The rest of the world would not understand, nor accept, the idea of a firearm with the Olympic rings on it, he said.

So what if shooting events have been part of the modern Olympics since 1896? So what that shooting events draw more spectators than any events besides track and field and boxing. Weren't Olympic events originally martial exercises? Wake up.

I'm with you Ollie.
IN addition to the shooting events it is all about competition and winning. Where does that fit into world peace? If you want everyone to be the same and get along wouldn't you discourage countrys from competing? Look at Nazzi Germany. Hitler was a big fan of the olympics and devoted considerable German resources in order to win medals. It's all about who is better, faster, stronger. An olympic target pistol is completely appropriate. Sig makes some damn fine handguns. I suppose archery and fencing are next. Better nix hockey, boxing, and soccer also....violent. Not boostong world peace. Maybe there should be an olympic "tollerance for your fellow man" event. Gold is too materialistic. The winning medal will be made of milk-toast.
Bah!
