The Internal Revenue Service has been recently audited. Government Auditors have found that IRS employees did steal close to $5.3 million in taxes over the course of a 3 year period.
The General Accounting Office says the IRS lacks basic deterrents to theft, such as security cameras as well as better tracking of tax payments: one employee altered a tax check to be made payable to "I.R. Smith" and deposited it into a personal account.
However head of the IRS's field centers, Jimmy Smith, claimed that "the instances of embezzlement and theft are extremely rare," and furthermore the GA audit "gives us some reassurance that the safeguards we [do] have in place are
working."
