 Escapee Pops Back To Jail For A Visit | | By: Phantom | Published: 05/06/1999 | | | |
| WELLINGTON (Reuters)
There were red faces in the New
Zealand prison service when an escaped
inmate from
one prison visited his wife at another jail without being
recognized.
The Dominion newspaper revealed Saturday that Cass Mei, 29,
on the run from Rangipo Prison since last November,
visited his wife, Renee, in an Auckland jail in February.
Prison authorities were unaware they had an escaped inmate
under their noses, the newspaper said.
The fugitive's daring prison visit only came to light after
police recaptured him, briefly, last month. Mei escaped again
when he outran prison
guards while in hospital with a supposed
dislocated knee and asthma, The Dominion reported.
Mei was serving a jail term for theft, fraud and burglary
while his wife was imprisoned for fraud.

NZ prisons do not deter crime, as they have amenities for inmates which make their "stay" comfortable.
