TOKYO (Reuters) -
A match to
promote goodwill among fierce rugby rivals Japan and South Korea
got off on a bad note when Japanese organizers played the wrong
national anthem for their guests.
As the players lined up for the Korean anthem, the strains of
"God Save Our Gracious Queen'' were played over the loud
speakers at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Rugby Ground in Tokyo
Sunday.
When the anthem finished, the 10,000 spectators remained
standing in blazing summer sunshine awaiting the correct anthems
of South Korea and then Japan.
But it was almost 10 minutes before the tapes could be located,
by which time many of the fans had begun singing the somber
chords of Japan's "Kimigayo'' on their own.
The game, the first in what will be an annual series to promote
friendship, eventually got under way 10 minutes late.
