Washington (AP) - Four prison inmates who claimed they earned
money as beggars found out they can't be choosers - at least
when it comes to claiming federal tax credits.
the U.S. Tax Court ruled that Miguel Bauta, Alfredo
Dominguez, Floyd Daniel Jr. and John Walter Wolf could not claim
earned-income tax credits in 1996 and 1997 because they had no
actual income.
The earned-income tax credit is available for low-income wage
earners and is meant to give people incentives to keep
working.
While in prison in Immokalee, Fla., the four filed income-tax
returns listing their occupation as "beggar" and claiming of
about $1.00 in each of those years. They also claimed
earned-income tax credits intended for the working poor of less
than $100 apiece in each year.
