WINNIPEG -- A bizarre saga involving an illegal alien from
Canada kept as a sex slave by his in-laws, then buried in their
backyard in South Dakota, has wound up in Winnipeg.
City police have arrested Jeffrey Scott Lewis, 35, on a U.S.
extradition warrant.
Lewis fled from the U.S. after police found the body of Robert
Lee "Pete" Warner, 30, buried in a shallow grave behind Lewis'
mobile home in Rowena, S.D.
Lewis, his wife Barbara, 47, and step-son Steve, 27, were
charged with various counts but not murder. Last March, Barbara
and Steve pleaded guilty. Barbara is serving a hefty 10-year
sentence for beating, starving and forcing sex acts upon Warner
while he lived with them for about four years after he was
divorced from Barbara's daughter.
It's believed Warner, originally from Ontario, died a year
before a family friend tipped police to the gravesite.
An autopsy failed to confirm an exact cause of death, said
Julie Irvine, an assistant U.S. attorney in Sioux Falls, S.D.
One woman testified she often saw Warner eating dog food or
fishing leftovers out of the garbage. She said he was whipped
and forced to masturbate while the family watched.
Warner did most of the cooking and cleaning. He also took his
stepfather's name and social security number, worked at a plant
and handed over his paycheques to the family.
