Fan Mail of the Week

By: JSkillsPublished: 09/02/2000

Save article to file cabinet Send to a Friend Print this out

This week's fan letter comes from a law firm who shall remain nameless. It turns out 20th Century Fox (and perhaps even Rupert Murdoch himself) are huge fans of Goofball.com. They’ve obviously made some significant efforts to get in contact with us. It almost makes me feel like a celebrity.

Check this out ...

Re: UNAUTHORIZED USE OF TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX PROPERTIES
Goofball.com (http://www.goofball.com)
Our Ref. No.: FX2069

Dear Sir or Madam:

This letter is being written to you on behalf of our client, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation (hereinafter "Fox"). Fox is the exclusive owner of all copyright, trademark and other intellectual property rights in and to the world-famous "The Simpsons" television series (hereinafter "The Simpsons Copyrights and Trademarks"). "The Simpsons" television series entertains millions of people worldwide and Fox rightfully takes its responsibility for the protection of The Simpsons Copyrights and Trademarks very seriously.

Fox has recently learned that your web site located at "http://www.goofball.com" contains unauthorized derivative copies of The Simpsons Copyrights and Trademarks and uses such copies in conjunction with sexually explicit material.

You are hereby put on notice that the reproduction and distribution by you of such unauthorized derivative copies of The Simpsons Copyrights and Trademarks constitutes copyright infringement, trademark infringement, trademark dilution, unfair competition and/or disparagement, and potentially subjects you to both criminal and civil sanctions.

Fox hereby demands that you and all those who have acted in concert with you immediately cease any copying, distribution, or other use of any of its protected intellectual property, including any use of The Simpsons Copyrights and Trademarks, and that you delete from your web site and any other sites operated by you (including any local, regional, or national bulletin board) all of the aforesaid Copyrights and Trademarks of our client. Should you not immediately do so, Fox expressly reserves all of its rights to file a lawsuit against you to obtain damages for all past acts of infringement and an injunction to prevent any future infringement.

We further request that you provide us with written confirmation before the close of business on September 11, 2000, that you have complied with these demands. If you do not do so, we will advise Fox to take such action against you as it may deem appropriate.

This letter is not a complete statement of Fox's rights in connection with this matter, and nothing contained herein constitutes an express or implied waiver of any rights, remedies, or defenses of Fox in connection with this matter, all of which are expressly reserved.

Very truly yours,

[name withhled]

Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

Flattering to say the least, isn’t it? I feel so important. Those who have made us laugh with the Simpsons for all these years are now Goofball fans. On an interesting note, they don't even own the domain www.simpons.com, instead having to settle for thesimpsons.com.

The reality of the situation is that in a matter of a few days, we’ll have to be taking down a bunch of items in our uncensored media and uncensored cartoons areas, unless we all want to have the diameter of our ring pieces increased dramatically while we take part in the real life version of the HBO show "Oz". And as appealing as that may seem for some of us here who lead pretty boring lives, I for one do not wish to be someone’s punk.

Why not join the rest of us on the inside and get all of Goofball.com?

You're an idiot man. The reason they have thesimpsons.com is because, gasp, the name of the show is "The Simpsons". Who would have guessed. Other than that though, whatever, if it was your stuff that people were basically stealing or bastardizing, you'd get upset too. Especially if you stuff was worth lots and lots of money. Give these people a break.

If Fox actually tried to sue, I personally don't think they'd have a case. The images on this site are parodies (duh!) and thus are the exception to the copyright law. Mad magazine doesn't need permission to caricature the Simpsons, so neither should anyone else.

Matt Groening is the creator of the Simpsons. Groening is also one of the biggest collectors of "alternative" Simpsons art. As quoted in Wizard Magazine (Oct 2000 - Angelina Joline as Lara Croft on cover...rrow!), he is always visiting comic cons to seek out parody and imitation artwork to encourage its production!!

Sure, he has sold the production rights to Fux. But his actions speak louder than lawyer$.

A glaring example of a attorney making work for himself by keeping Fux apprised that people are using The Simpsons likenesses on the internet. Who really cares who owns the "intellectual property rights" to them? Some idiot intellectual rights attorney who can't make it in the courtroom. I say let the Simpsons fornicate freely on Goofball, and anywhere else for that matter.

Fox has not only gone after the Simpsons stuff on the internet. I also know they have shut down a couple of X-Files websites also by threating legal action. Who knows where they will strike next.

Unfuckingbeleivable. I can't beleive Fox would get so hyped up over a few pics pf Bart getting some. What about all the High school kids drawing this shit on bathroom walls, can they be sued, too?

provide totally wholesome entertainment, but now they're both like the internet---you have to separate the good from the evil for your kids. I think I could do without either Fox or the Disney products and save myself a lot of money.

Some of the very few submissions I've had accepted were of The Simpson's misbehaving. I'm truly upset by this, don't these people realise that by us promoting their cartoons etc. we are actually encouraging people to watch their shows, thus boosting their ratings and advertising revenues. They ought to be paying us not threatening legal action. Maybe Goofball should counterclaim against Fox (hmmmmmmmmm and several other maojor cartoon corporations come to think of it !) Hahahahahahahahaha

They got a lot of letters to send out. That Simpson crap is all over the net. hahahahaha

They will go broke trying to sue.

After much time and tons of money spent, Playboy Enterprises finally shut down Scanmaster. He scanned all the playboy centerfolds. He had scanned a total of 1000 scans before they stopped him. Now their scans are everywhere. Sooner or later people are going to realize that they can't stop material posted on the internet. I guess they just pick on the biggest guys, like GOOFBALL....YAY!!

BTW, I love this fan mail stuff. Do some more.

Just between you and me, one thing I don't care for is the time of last post on our fans page. My boss can readily see I made a post at 3:00 in the afternoon. hahaha

Take care and this was interesting.
