Parental Influence or Nail in the Head?

It seems to me that parents are becoming seriously lack in their duties nowadays. Now, I'm not a parent myself and thus don't have any defined parental skills, but one thing I do know for sure: you don't leave your kid unattended.

Right here in my home town of Phoenix, AZ, I watch the local news every night. And every night, I see stories about parents "accidentally" leaving their kids in the bath tub, leaving their kids alone to roam on a construction site, letting them walk home by themselves in a busy locale. Just two weeks ago, a local boy drowned. Two days ago, a toddler wandered onto a construction site and fell, thereby driving a long roofing nail into his skull. And, today, a 12 year old girl, riding the city bus, gets off at her usual bus stop and is no where to by found tonight.

What happened to actually watching your kids? I think being a parent has come to be a nuisance to people, more than a gift. They care about their kids only when it's convenient.

I'm not speaking out against all parents; there's some great parents out there. However, there are just too many cases of children getting hurt by lack of supervision.

I mean, after all... wouldn't you want your mom there to tell you not to fall and run a roofing nail into your head?

I have seen so much terrible parenting out there these days it makes me ill....and that includes both single and two parent families. I understand parents are busy and must give their children some independence, but letting a toddler wander off onto a construction site? That is simply irresponsibility on the part of the parents. What sort of parent is so oblivious that they couldnt notice that their toddler has wandered completely away from them. Give me a break. My parents, and I had two of them, who both worked, always made sure someones eye was on me at all times. But then, many of my childhood friends whose parents didnt pay attention, or just basically never cared where they were or what they did, ended up getting lost somewhere, indulging in petty crimes, hurting other children, hurting themselves, and other horrible things that you hope never happens to your children. And those children of neglectful parents, if they do live long enough to grow up, can end up like a lot of my old friends: criminals, drug abusers, prostitutes, and future neglectful parents. Dont have kids if youre too self centered to love them more than yourself. Having children IS supposed to be a sacrifice, and if that means you have to interrupt your life a little to be there for them, then thats life. Dont bitch about it. I agree with chukmac about being educated before you have kids.....and believe it or not, there are ways to prevent nature from providing you with offspring if youre not ready and mature enough to handle it. Oh, and also, lets not slag people who actually do choose to get married before having kids.....it takes a lot of maturity and responsibility to make that commitment. Suprise suprise lots of people still actually do that nowadays......and I can actually admire those that do it. Anyone can be a single parent. Just look at my 18 year old single pregnant sister. Sorry if I cant admire that.

Hey hey dont worry! I am a responsible parent, emotionally and financially and i wouldnt let anything happen to MY kids. But what i was trying to get at is that parents can only do so much -- for instance this twelve year old girl that was talked about, what happened to her -- kidnapped? Probally. I talk to my kids all the time about strangers etc, etc, but lo and behold it doesn't stop them from talking to them. And then to boot, you don't want to make them too scared to talk at all. I agree that spikes and some of the nasty stuff mentioned are entirely avoidable, but there are some things that we can only hope that our kids get the message and follow. OH and by the way: get an education before you have kids? -- wonderful idea, but Nature doesn't always allow that to happen. And Kudos to your parents who were 'actually' married before had kids -- In the 50's? And guess what -- I honestly did not think I would ever BE a single parent, it's not something that I ever expected, just turned out that way. I do my best, and I know I am a damn good parent.

This is specifically in reply to the person who wrote"WHAT?". I don't believe that when/if this person decides to have a child it will change his opinion. I have a child and I agree whole-heartedly! Since when does allowing your child to wander off and fall on a spike constitute teaching them "independance"? How about people actually start having kids only when they are financially and emotionally responsible enough to do so?? Hey...what an idea!! How about you get your education BEFORE you have kids? Wow...novel concept. My mother and father were actually married before they had kids but my dad died when I was three. Somehow my mom managed to raise three kids on her own and work full time without one of us ending up with a nail in the head or losing a limb in a bizarre blender accident. Lucky?..no. Responsible?..absolutely.

My dream....a Democrat versus Republican "deathmatch". After extinguishing their opponents, the winners get to do the country another favor by putting a bullet in their own heads!

Exscuse Me? Ever hear of something called single parenting? When you have to get supper ready, make lunches for the next day, get them in the tub, clean up EVERYTHING, and If you just so happen to be a single parent in school with homework, then good luck on watching kids 24-7!!
We have to teach some sorta of independance, to help them and ourselves. We can be as overprotective as possible and then what do you get -- a whacked out parent, wired and ready to blow at any moment. There are just some tthings that cannot be controlled. And if something does happen, most likely the mom/parent will feel gawd awful! So, when you ARE a parent maybe you can reflect back on your judgmental words and have a different outlook!

I agree completely with what this person has to say. If you are going to be a parent, wake up and take on the responsibility. It shouldn't seem like a burden, that's your CHILD and you should want more than anything to protect it. I may be a woman, but if anyone ever dared to bother my kids....watch out, brother. This mama bengal tiger will fight tooth and nail!

We are not living in a world where both parents must work to make ends meet. If people would live within their means instead of accepting every damn credit card that was sent to them we could go back to a one income family! That's reality!

I am anonymous because I don't want to fill out a bunch of bull-shit e-forms. Now, lets look this over. Have you stopped to realize that our economy requires that both parents to work? I'm not condoning anyone that neglects any child, however; A parent cannot be everywhere all the time. So many people today go the other way and smother their kids and not give them any freedom, and they rebel, give them not enough and they cry out for attention by shooting each other. It's a tough road to hoe, but try it sometime and see how difficult it can be. In other words, mind your own business there are shitty things in this world that you can't control. There are shitty people that can't be controlled.

should not be allowed to have kids at all.I live in Iowa where a little girl named Shelby Dues was
raped beaten repetedly and burned with cig's untill she died of blunt force trama to the head she was 4 years old. and the mother and live in boyfriend were not convicted of her death but they were the only one's in the house with her. The mother said the her loser boyfriend did it but said she had no idea he was beating her. Shelby was brought to a hospital several times with serious injuries. this said nothing to the mother (who was a crank addict)about her boyfriend. She let it go from where I stand and they both should have there heads lopted off in the town square.Make it an event serve food and drinks.

We all know that there are some parents who dont look after the kids as they should. Non of us do. All our children have been hurt doing something we parents could have avoided. But as they were small accidents we dont give them that much importance. But they could be considered our mistake.
Now think if one of those mistakes causes the death of your child.
Just imagine the utter pain. The feeling of guilt. The emptiness in your soul.
Have mercy on those parents, the mercy you would like to feel if it happened to you. They will pay for their sin all their lives. It will follow them like a shadow. Always.
Just be thankful that day you left those scissors at the reach of your lil kid nothing happened.
Let's be very careful and feel sorry for the parents.
And say a prayer for the kids.
    Life is a bitch sometimes.

In Calgary, AB, a woman took her son and another boy across a set of railway tracks and expanded a hole in a chain-link fence so that the boys could throw rocks into an irrigation canal. Both boys (under 10 yrs) fell in and were swept away, killed by the freezing, swift water. And, of course, she thinks it's the fault of the people who put the canal there.

In Maryland, where I live, some woman accidentally locked her kid in her car at a gas station when she went in to pay the clerk. They couldn't pry the window down due to electrical windows when suddenly some guy came in speeding like hell...who knows if he was drunk or not because...he smashed into a gas pump and blew the joint, killing himself and the car with the poor little kid still in the backseat..don't worry though, mommy wasn't hurt.
