Sunol, California (AP): Some former mayors might be remembered with a street or a building bearing their name.

Local businessman Mike Cerny went a little farther when creating a memorial to Bosco, a mixed-breed Rottweiler-Labrador that was elected Sunol's honorary mayor back in 1981.

Cerny has molded a life-sized beer tap in Bosco's image. The contraption requires lifting one of the dog's hind legs to draw a pint.

Cerny plans to open Bosco's Bones and Brew, a restaurant that will prominently feature the $3,500 tap. The restaurant is expected to open next month.

Sunol, an unincorporated area outside San Francisco Bay, has no city government. Bosco was elected in 1981 as honorary mayor, easily defeating two human opponents.

His political coup was reported far and wide. A newspaper in China, misunderstanding American humor, wrote an editorial deriding free elections and democracy.

Bosco died in 1994.
